SURINAM TOAD, common name for an aquatic amphibian native to muddy river bottoms of eastern South America. It is brownish in color and has a squared body and triangular head. The toad grows up to 15 cm (6 in) in length. The forefingers are long and starlike at the tips and the hind feet are webbed. In an unusual breeding habit, the male presses fertilized eggs into protective pockets in the skin of the female?s back. The eggs hatch in the pockets and, weeks later, tiny froglets emerge. The toad rarely leaves the water and swims swiftly. Unlike most other frogs and toads the Suriname toad has no tongue; it feeds on small fish. |
