Menhaden
           
                        MENHADEN, common name for any of several fishes of the genus Brevoortia, of the
                        family Clupeidae (see HERRING) found off the eastern coast of the U.S. The
                        maximum length of the Atlantic menhaden, B. tyrrannus, is about 38 cm (about 15
                        in). The fish is rich in oil and is caught in large numbers for use as bait, animal feed,
                        and fertilizer. It is not esteemed as a food fish.
