Marlin

MARLIN, common name for several large, edible game fishes of the genera
Tetrapturus and Makaira of the family Istiophoridae, which also contains the sailfish
and the spearfish. Marlins, which are rapid swimmers found in most warm seas,
closely resemble the sailfish, differing chiefly in having smaller dorsal fins. As in the
sailfish, the nasal bones of the upper jaw are elongated into a long, rounded spear.
Marlins attain a maximum weight of about 630 kg (about 1400 lb). The black marlin,
                        M. indica, and the striped marlin, T. audax, are common Pacific species. The white
marlin, M. albidus, is a popular Atlantic Ocean sports fish. The name is sometimes
                        applied to the spearfish.
