CONGO EEL, common name for an eel-like salamander of the southeastern U.S. that spends most of its time in water. This amphibian gives a clear whistle when it is disturbed. Blue-black in color, it has a thick body about 91 cm (about 36 in) long, with four tiny, useless legs ending in two or three toes. Its eyes are covered with lids. The congo eel is harmless to humans and feeds on small fishes, snails, and insect larvae. It is also called the congo snake. |
