Collared Lizard

COLLARED LIZARD, common name for reptiles
in a genus of lizards of the iguana family. The
common collared lizard feeds mostly on insects,
but it will bite if disturbed and, because this
feisty reptile can run rapidly on its hind legs, it
often looks like a small, fierce dinosaur. Collared
lizards are found in dry, open regions of the
south-central U.S. and Mexico; the common
species ranges from the Ozark Mountains to
southern California. They are also called
                        ring-necked lizards.
