BLUEFISH, common name for a fish, Pomatomus saltatrix, living in warm seas throughout the world. Bluefish are voracious, and large schools enter the coastal waters every spring to prey on other fish when they come inshore to spawn, sometimes leaving a trail of blood for miles. Young bluefish are called snappers. Bluefish are among the most important food fish of the Atlantic seaboard, and catching bluefish is a highly regarded sport. The largest specimen on record weighed more than 11 kg (more than 25 lb), but the usual weight is 2 to 7 kg (5 to 15 lb). |
